WHEN EVERY MONDAY (& WEDNESDAY 'Chess & Chill' on Lichess.org)
WHERE YO SARNIE, EPSOM, KT17 4QJ
We are one of Surrey's fastest-evolving clubs and welcome all players, regardless of ability. We would love you to come along and you will improve in no time!
In a competitive sense, we are always on the lookout for players to help us achieve our aim of winning Division 1 of the Surrey Chess League. However, we are keen to support all members, including beginners, to become an active part of our club.
We run a monthly blitz tournament, allowing new members to integrate quickly and test their skills. These photos were taken in November 2021 - it is so nice to be back playing over-the-board again!
PROMOTIONAL VIDEO AND JUNIOR CLUB
Check out our promotional video! It is a surrealist take on what our club nights look like.
Epsom Junior Chess Club was launched in November 2019 and is run by the club's founder and 27-year-old president, Marcus Gosling.
After a long break due to Covid, sessions are back underway on Thursday evenings from 6.45-7.45pm and 7.45-8.45pm in the upstairs area of Epsom Methodist Church. Less experienced players go for the earlier session, whereas stronger juniors opt for the later session.
Many parents choose to stay in the bar for a relaxing drink and perhaps even a bite to eat.
Sessions cost roughly £6/pupil, paid on a termly basis. However, if you are attending the club for the first time as a 'trial', there is only a £1 charge for that first session.
Please note that Epsom Junior Chess Club is currently only open to 'intermediate' juniors aged 7-15. For beginner sessions, we recommend the classes at the excellent new Chessington Chess Club.
ABOUT THE CLUB
The original Epsom Chess Club existed from 1929 to 1967, led throughout by a legend of Surrey chess, Hector Marshall. However, due to competition from other clubs and the difficulty of finding a permanent playing location, it went out of existence in the late-1960s.
In 2018, two keen chess-playing friends,
Marcus Gosling and Ravi Sharma, decided to
re-establish Epsom Chess Club.
Our adult teams have multiplied for the 2021/22 season. We aim to ensure that all players get an opportunity to represent the club if they would like to.
Our club night takes place on Monday evenings at Yo Sarnie, a sandwich bar run by one of our members, which is very close to Epsom town centre. There are car parks nearby.
Chess players of all abilities are most welcome at Epsom Chess Club.
Serious players will have the opportunity to represent us in a number of matches in Surrey league and cup competitions, whereas casual players will be able to hone their skills against other members over a drink.
Annual membership fees for the adult club are as follows:
ADULT FULL MEMBER - £30.00
PLAYERS AGED UNDER 18 - a small donation
Members must also sign up to the English Chess Federation or renew their membership annually, and can do so below.
In 2021/22, we are conducting a Club Championship (our annual internal competition). We also run additional Surrey Individual competitions and fun events throughout the year.
Epsom Chess Club president, Marcus Gosling, teaches in a large number of schools around Surrey and South London.
He also runs private one-to-one sessions on weeknights for both children and adults. As well as chess, in the past he has taught Russian and French to adults and English as a Foreign Language to both children and adults.
